Confusion At The Polls
Sean e-mails:
I am confused by the question posed on the website. Can you please clarify the difference between "More drinkin'" and "More family fun time" and "More free time"? I say we use more free time to drive the Model T's to the liquor store to buy booze for more drinkin time which leads to more family fun time.
A Floridian having a hard time understanding a ballot? Imagine that. At least he didn't saying anything about "hanging Chads"...
The chronicles of a family's annual summer tour through the countryside of Wisconsin in Model T Fords as well as other Doughty family related matters of interest.

A media site in the U.K. that goes by the name 18 Doughty Street is part of Doughty Media Limited. Anyone else smell a potential 500 sponsor?

Process Improvement
Process Improvement
It seems hard to believe that it could get any better than driving through the woods for hours at a time, but there are some who dare to think outside the Doughty 500 box and come up with ideas to make the annual event even better.
Danette is one of those people. Here are a couple of her suggestions:
About other things to do on the 500, Dad had mentioned once he would like to have a scavenger hunt.( For Model T parts of course!) Also I think we should visit more sites of interest in the small towns, like the little museums or what ever.
And bars. More bars is always good. Now that Danette has gotten the crank turning, how about weighing in with your own suggestions?
Drop me an e-mail or add a comment to this post.

Dan Doughty In Milwauke Journal
Dan Doughty In Milwaukee Journal
Ex-POWs defend tough interrogation of terrorism suspects:
Dan Doughty agrees. He, too, was shot down in Vietnam and spent almost seven years as a prisoner of war. He, too, was tortured and forced to write letters saying he was treated well.
In the war on terror, "there are no uniformed soldiers. They're not fighting for a country. They don't have a nation behind them," said Doughty, 73, who grew up in Ladysmith and now lives in Eau Claire. "I'd sure hate to see several thousand people die (in a terror attack) because we couldn't ask a question for fear we were mistreating" terror suspects.
When he was first captured, he told his captors his name, rank, serial number and date of birth - the only information military members are obligated to provide under the Geneva Conventions.
It didn't do any good and only infuriated Doughty's captors. It took two decades for the numbness in Doughty's hands and arms to go away.
Doughty saw the Abu Ghraib prison scandal photos and read about the convictions of American soldiers working as guards at the Baghdad prison. In Doughty's opinion, the Abu Ghraib prisoners were mistreated, not tortured. And the Bush administration's attempt to clarify some of the language in the Geneva Conventions probably won't matter in future wars, he said.
"I don't think anybody we'd have a future war with is going to be different than Vietnam," Doughty said. "Look at what happened to our soldiers that have been captured (in Iraq this year). They've been tortured and cut up and put in the street. That's what we're dealing with."

Sponsorship?
Sponsorship?
We spent a lot of time on the last 500 talking about trying to line up a sponsor for next year's tour. The name Leinenkugels was thrown around quite a bit and with good reason. But I think we can expand beyond merely the "Official Beer of The Doughty 500" and so I've started a list. Please feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments or send me an e-mail. Then we'll get our crack marketing staff (which I believe consists of David and one of his nieces) to work on lining 'em up.
- The Official Gin of the Doughty 500
- The Official Scotch of the Doughty 500
- The Official Tire of the Doughty 500
- The Official Coffee of the Doughty 500
- The Official Sunscreen of the Doughty 500
- The Official Hotel of the Doughty 500 (you can trust that it won't be Days Inn)
- The Official Hand Held Video Game Player of the Doughty 500
- The Official Snack Food of the Doughty 500
- The Official Bail Bondsman of the Doughty 500
- More?

Badger Bars
Badger Bars
If you want an excellent look at the history of some of the bars and taverns that made Wisconsin great, you should check out Badger Bars & Tavern Tales: An Illustrated History of Wisconsin Saloons:
Journey back to the days when neighborhood taverns were the social hubs of all small towns. Relive the days when wild revelry was the norm. Old newspaper articles and photos are highlighted throughout the book. Interviews with "old-timers" give a personal glimpse into the days when Wisconsin was wild. Taverns and towns throughout the state are featured.
I picked up the book in July and brought it with me on the 500. It's chock full of pics and colorful tales of bar life throughout Wisconsin's history.

Rather than just throw up pictures from the 2006 Doughty 500 wily nily, I'm going to post one of my favorites each day and seek input on the best caption to decribe the "action." Here's my first entry and caption. Feel free to provide your own in the comments:
"Buck up boys. Only four more hours and we'll be back at the motel."

Media Matters
Media Matters
We start with the Eau Claire Leader Telegram story--Despite heat, family rumbles through region for annual Model T tour:
Despite Monday's scorching temperatures, Hal Doughty was ready to hit the highway in his 1925 Model T.
And so were the rest of the riders in the Doughty 500, an annual tour in which family members take their vintage cars for a 500-mile cruise over four days.
"I had five brothers, and we all had Model Ts," said Doughty, 82, of Eau Claire, who organized this year's tour. "In '87 we said, 'Let's make a trip,' and we figured the weekend would be 500 miles so we called it the Doughty 500. We've done it ever since."
Next up is the Dunn County News--Doughty 500--This isn't your average family reunion:
Originally, the trip was one long excursion. But when the reunion got so big that finding lodging each night became nearly impossible, it was decided to make a few smaller trips from one central location that would still tally about 500 miles.
Though it wasn't Doughty's turn this year, he wanted to host the event from his home in Eau Claire for two reasons. He and his wife, Doris, are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. And the family held a dedication at the Arkansaw Middle School.
The bell tower of the District No. 5 Black (Big Arkansaw) School was moved there and a plaque with a list of the students and their teacher for the 1904-05 school year was attached to the old tower.
The Black family is a large part of the Doughty reunion, with three of the Blacks listed on the school register. At the bottom of the plaque, it reads: Donated by the family of Herb and Ruth Black Doughty: Sam, Hal, Merle, Paul, Dan, Bernard, Nathalie, Brendan.
Six of those boys were the founders of an adventure that has exploded in popularity. This year's week-long reunion brought 50 to 60 family members from across the country, including Maryland, Oklahoma, Florida, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Okay, a few quick things to cover.
First off, I apologize for the light posting of late. It's been a combination of lack of time, lack of new topics, and technical difficulties. Now that the 2006 Five-Hundred is in the books, I'll be posting recaps, pictures, and future plans.
That brings up the second topic. If you have pics from the 2006 Doughty 500 (or any related Doughty family events for that matter), tales that you want to tell, quotes to pass on, or suggestions for this site, please let me know. You can e-mail me at: rightwinger23@hotmail.com
Some sections that I do want to add/expand on the site include:
- A quotable quotes page
- A family tree (with pics if possible)
- A more complete listing of contact information
- More information on past tours
- Polls on what you want to see on future Doughty 500 tours
- Sponsorship opportunities
But I can't possibly do this alone (yes, I'm looking at you Tom, Sean, and Dave). In fact, I'd love to have a couple of other people posting here. The main page is what we in the industry like to call a "blog" (short for weblog) and blogging is something that anyone can do (as evidenced by the fact that Jay occasionally blogs at FratersLibertas.com). Anyway, let me know if you want to help.
If you don't want to get involved on the blogging side, the least you can do is send in your pics, stories, quotes, suggestions, etc.
We appreciate your support.

Re: 2006 DOUGHTY 500 31 July thru 4 August
Home base will be the Days Inn on the S.W. side of Eau Claire. Lots of good restaurants in the area. Have 20 rooms blocked in the Doughty 500 name. $69, tax, etc. for one queen or two doubles and full breakfast. Phone 715-835-2242.
Plan to start Monday at 0930, lunch in Durand at the old Ford garage, then to Arkansaw to dedicate a list of students in the bell tower of the old Black school. Back to motel thru Eau Gallie. Monday evening we hope everyone can join us at the Timber Lodge where we will celebrate our 60th Wedding Anniversary. We have reserved a large room and you can order from the regular menu.
Have Tuesday scheduled for an off day. Wednesday we will go N.W. and have lunch at the Old Albertville Tavern at Hotterville Junction. Thursday and Friday still up in the air. Looking forward to seeing you all then or sooner.
