Going in to the 2019 tour we had a balance of $2052 available.

Total expenses for the 2019 tour was $1674.

The 2019 auction took in $1255.

So we now have a balance of $1633 available.

Paul Doughty R.I.P.

Paul Arden Doughty:

Paul Arden Doughty, 89, of Haugen died on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire. He was born November 26, 1929 in Durand, WI to Royal and Ruth (Black) Doughty, and graduated from Ladysmith High School. He served 3 years with the US Marine Corps during the Korean War, stationed at Cherry Point in North Carolina. Upon his return, Paul worked a variety of jobs, including 10 years in the Caribbean for Pan Am Airlines as a mechanic, artificial inseminator, Standard Oil Station operator, Vocational School Teacher, abstract title company owner and machinist at Koser Iron Works. Paul spent countless hours restoring and maintaining his Model T Ford and enjoyed trout fishing area streams. He looked forward to the annual "Doughty 500," a 500 mile Model T excursion. He was married in Holy Trinity Catholic Church - Haugen on May 17, 1990 to Bernice (Zimmerman) Schuld.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice of Haugen; 3 brothers: Daniel (Terry) Doughty of Eau Claire, Bernard (Carmen) Doughty of Excelsior, MN and Brendan (Karen) Doughty of Nekoosa; 5 stepchildren: Robert (Carol) Schuld of Green Bay, Mary Ann (Duane) Paine of Prescott, Gregory Schuld of Fort Lauderdale, FL, John (Teresa) Schuld of Green Bay and Thomas (Mary Kay) Schuld of Palm Springs, CA; 18 step grandchildren and numerous step great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends. Paul was preceded in death by siblings: Sam, Hal, Merle and Nathalie; stepchildren: Barb, David and Mike.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 16, 2019 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church - Haugen with Father Ed Anderson officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 hour prior to the Mass on Friday at the church.

Skinner Funeral Home of Rice Lake is serving the family.

Reminders
• There is no breakfast at the resort so you’ll need to manage that on your own. There is a store on site that has a limited selection of food items.
• If you’re staying in a duplex or a house, you need to bring your own towels.
• There are a ton of recreation options at the resort including a beach, water trampoline, playground, volleyball court, athletic field, disc golf course, hiking and biking trails, fishing, tennis courts, bocce ball, bonfire pits, horseshoes, basketball court, and rental options for canoeing, kayaking, and tubing on the Namekagon River. Be prepared for fun.

2018 Doughty 500 Details

We already announced the dates for the 2018 Doughty 500 as July 23-27. Now we have a location.

Our base camp will be at the Heartwood Conference Center and Resort in Trego, WI (not really all that near the town, but that’s the address).

The resort offers a number of summer activities including:

We have twenty standard rooms reserved at this point (can get more if needed). Each room has two queen beds, a refrigerator, and a microwave. The rate is $120 per night.

However, there are other lodging options as well.

• There are five four-bedroom duplex cabins available. Each duplex side features four bedrooms, three with two sets of twin bunk beds and one with a queen bed so you could sleep up to fourteen people in one. They also have a fully equipped kitchen. The nightly rate for the duplex cabins is $319.

• There are also two cottages available. Each has one bedroom with a queen bed and the second with two twin beds — as well as a queen sofa/sleeper in the living room so they could sleep up to six people. They have full kitchens as well. The nightly rate for the cottages is $219.

What you need to do:

DO NOT contact the resort directly. If you need a reservation, please respond to me with your name, if you want a lodge room or one of the other options, and how many guests. I will pass that information along to the resort. If we end up needing more rooms I will work with the resort. I went with twenty to start with assuming that at least some of the Doughty crew will go for a cabin or cottage (the Bernie branch has already locked up the Hoinville House).

Also please let me know if you will be attending the dinner on Thursday night and how many in your party (adults/kids) so we can plan for that.

And we need to fill happy hours on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday so let me know if you want to host.

Please note that the resort does not offer breakfast during the week. There is a store on site that sells yogurt, bagels, muffins, juice, granola bars, cheese, hand fruit (apples, oranges) and pop tarts. Plan accordingly.

Herbert "Hal" Doughty

Herbert "Hal" Doughty Obituary:

Herbert “Hal” Doughty, LTCOL, USAF (ret), 93 of Eau Claire passed away peacefully at home on Monday, December 11, 2017. Born in Arkansaw, WI, he was the son of Herb and Ruth (Black) Doughty.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Doris (Marsh); his children: Theresa Hill, Maureen (Ray) Koncen, Patrick Doughty, Michael (Tamara) Doughty and Erin Patrice; nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He is also survived by: brothers: Dan (Terry) Doughty, Bernard (Carmen) Doughty, Paul (Bernice) Doughty and Brendan (Karen) Doughty.

He is preceded in death by a brother, Sam and sisters: Merle Daniels and Nathalie Swienton.
Hal served in WWII, the Korean War and one mission in Vietnam. He retired from the US Air Force in 1973 after 30 years of service and moved to Eau Claire. His interests included flying, his membership in the Elks Lodge, water skiing, hunting, fishing, playing cards, traveling and Model T’s. He greatly enjoyed his yearly week long Model T road trips with his extended family.

Visitation is at 5:00 P.M. with a service at 6:00 P.M. on Sunday, December 17, 2017, at Stokes, Prock and Mundt Funeral Chapel, Altoona. Burial will be at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, December 18, 2017, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, 7601 34th Avenue, South Minneapolis, MN 55450.

In lieu of flowers request donations be made to Honor Flight Inc., Attn: Dian Gresse, 175 S. Tuttle Road, Springfield, OH 45505.

R.I.P. Nathalie Anne "Dixie" Swienton

Obituary for Nathalie Anne Swienton:

Nathalie Anne “Dixie” Swienton, 79, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2016. She was born November 19, 1936 to Royal Herbert Doughty and Ruth Bernice (Black) Doughty in Ladysmith, Wisconsin.

Nathalie married the love of her life Andrew Warren Swienton on July 27, 1957 in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. They celebrated 49 years of life and marriage together.

Nathalie worked as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone, as an agent for Airways, and as an accounting clerk for Sears Roebuck until her retirement in 1990. Nathalie loved being a housewife and mother to her children. She loved to collect cobalt glass and snowmen. She was an avid reader, loved working crossword puzzles and traveling with her family. Nathalie also loved doing volunteer work for the Broken Arrow Public Schools System. Most importantly, Nathalie loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was also a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Nathalie will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herb and Ruth Doughty; her husband, Andy Swienton; sister and brother-in-law, Merle and Don Daniels; and brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Harriet Doughty.

Nathalie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Jamie Swienton of Green Bay, WI; daughters and sons-in-laws, Pam and Frank Barrett of Muskogee, OK, DeeAnne and Chris Gilling of Pewaukee, WI, and Jean and Kelly Brassfield of Broken Arrow, OK; grandchildren, James Stevens of Muskogee, OK, Andi and Bryce Clark of Muskogee, OK, David and Blair Stevens of Sand Springs, OK, Kali and Pat Bell of Columbus, OH, Michael Gilling of Pewaukee, WI, Andrew Swienton of Green Bay, WI, Ryli Brassfield of Broken Arrow, OK, Hunter Swienton of Green Bay, WI, and Caden Brassfield of Broken Arrow, OK; great grandchildren, Margot and Dean Stevens of Sand Springs, OK, and Myles and Maxton Clark of Muskogee, OK; brothers and sisters-in-law, Hal and Doris Doughty of Eau Claire, WI, Paul and Bernice Doughty of Haugen, WI, Dan and Terry Doughty of Eau Claire, WI, Bernard and Carmen Doughty, St. Paul, MN, and Brendon and Karen Doughty of Wisconsin Rapids, WI; 21 nieces and nephews and many other family members and friends.

Nathalie will be reunited with her loving husband Andy Swienton at 9:00 a.m., April 2, 2016 at the Holcombe Cemetery on HWY 27 south of Holcombe WI. A "going home" celebration will be officiated by Pastor Bill Plautz. Following the graveside service there will be a memorial celebration meal starting at 11:00 am at the Fill-Inn Station, 104 W Columbia St, Chippewa Falls, WI. In lieu of flowers, we are asking family and friends to make donations to the Swienton Scholarship Fund, which will fund Tanzania students to attend Morogoro International School. Dangerous Doughty

Dangerous Doughty--a quantitative study of disproportion between the size of endotracheal tubes and splits in tonsillectomy gag blades:

Abstract

The Doughty split tongue blade is used routinely with the Boyle Davis mouth gag during tonsillectomy. If the width of the slot in the blade is excessive, then the endotracheal tube may herniate through the slot in the blade and become fixed and inseparable from the blade. We report two cases of paediatric tonsillectomy where this potentially serious complication occurred. The slot widths of disposable and reusable Doughty blades were measured and specifications were obtained from several manufacturers. All disposable paediatric Doughty blades and some of the reusable blades were found to have excessively and potentially dangerously wide slots. Compression testing of endotracheal tubes by the manufacturer demonstrated marked increases in deformability on warming to body temperature. Ensuring that the slot width of the Doughty blade is not excessive for the endotracheal tube used is essential and we give recommendations.

Joyously Anticipated Pleasure Trips

Recently my Dad (aka "Bernie") gave me a Model T instruction book that originally came out in 1913. He purchased it in 1962 (a reprint) according to the receipt in the book.

It's actually more of a pamphlet but there are some classic quotes that may be of interest to the motoring ("Out of my way, I'm a motorist!) Doughtys of the 500.

Under the heading "Vigilance and Oil:"

     The liability of trouble, with the consequent marring of pleasure trips through neglect to make adjustments promptly, increases by the square of the times they are neglected.

Kind of a complicated little sentence there but personally I've never had a pleasure trip marred by anything unexpected happening with a T.

It goes on:

     If the history of all the joyously anticipated pleasure trips that have ended disastrously could be written, it would be shown that in 90 per cent of the cases the humiliation and disappointment might have been avoided by making a certain repair and adjustment, the necessity of which was known before starting, instead of trusting to luck and a crippled part.

Joyously anticipated pleasure trips…ending disastrously…humiliation and disappointment.  Let's reflect on those concepts for a moment over the past four decades of T'ing.  

Yeah, nothing comes to mind in the context of T's.  What hyperbole those old-fashioned corporate writers engaged in!  Scaring people unnecessarily just to make sure they put oil in their crankcases.

We all know that as long as you care for your T, the chances of suffering humiliation and disappointment on a T voyage are very, very…small.

Cranks and Critters

Today's Wall Street Journal had an article about an event in Oregon that may provide some insight on how to spice up next year's Doughty 500. When These Little Pigs Go Racing, There Are Rules Against Boorishness:

Driving in circles while holding a pig properly is something that demands hewing to the rules.

The Pig-N-Ford Race has long been the premier event at the Tillamook County Fair in this town of about 5,000. Each racer grabs a young pig from a pen with one arm, crank starts a Model T Ford with the other and drives around a dirt track clutching the porker.

As the pigs join their racers this weekend for the 2014 Pig-N-Ford finals, they will face some of the sorts of rules, rivalries and whiff of controversy that often consume motor sports.

The pertinent question at this point is exactly how this crazy contest got started.

The race, in its 90th year, is rooted in the 1920s, when someone in a Model T saw a neighbor's pig running loose. He chased it down in the car and scooped it up. Locals turned the episode into an annual event.

We wouldn't have to stick with pigs of course. Any farm animal would do. And there are no shortage of farms in Wisconsin. A little research project might be in store for Mike and Sean before next year.

On the Block

The take from the 2014 Doughty 500 auction netted out at $1115. This will be added to the kitty and used for productive purposes on the 2015 Doughty 500 (t-shirts, drinks, etc.).
