Andy Swienton R.I.P.
A message from Pam Barrett:
Dad passed away this morning at 9:40am est. He was in no pain and he
walked himself from this world to the next. We were all here as he
wanted. He waited for everyone to be here before he got really bad.
He crawled out of bed and wanted to stand. Andy and I held him as he
took his last steps. We all held him and set him in the wheel chair.
When we set him in the wheel chair to get him back to the bed, Andy
and Jean said he was gone and he lifted his head one last time, looked
at us and then breathed his last. He went out fighting all the way,
but now the terrible pain in is back is over. He was peaceful toward
the end. Mom is doing ok and we're all hanging in there. We're going
to have two services, one in Florida and one in Wisconsin.

They're Everywhere
What is it with Doughtys and old cars anyways? Tony e-mails:
Sure enjoyed discovering a link this morning to your Doughty 500 website. I had heard about the tour a few years ago,but not in any detail.
By way of introducing myself, my name is Tony Doughty, I live in Walker, MN, have been an antique car hobbyist for a number of years, and the owner of a 1915 T touring for the past two years. The primary interest my wife and I have in the hobby is touring with the old cars. I'm writing you now from Green Valley, AZ where we spend the winter months. We have our T out here with us , and plan to take it over to the HCCA annual meeting and 4-day tour in Yuma next month.
While trying to keep my T as original looking as possible, (it still has it's original upholstery!), I have made a few touring and safety changes in the two years I've owned it including conversion to a distributor, directional signals, a brake light, Rocky Mtn Brakes, safety glass, and a modern but vintage appearing KC Warford transmission. In addition to the HCCA, we belong to the MTFCA and the Tucson Touring T's sub-chapter, as well as the VMCCA and the AACA..
I was particularly interested in noting all the family involvement in the photos on the website of the 2004 trip. Our grandchildren will be 7 and 5 this summer, and just about the age where we want to start bringing them along on a tour or two. I don't think it will work this July, as we already have commitments just before and just after the announced dates for this year(Pierce Arrow meet in Springfield IL and Twin Cities HCCA pre-16 tour in Siren, WI) but perhaps we can get involved down the road.
Thanks for taking the time to set up the website and to read this e-mail. I don't know where all the Doughty's involved in this group came from, but our wing of the family came from Troy, NY (great-grandfather) and Williamstown, MA (grandfather and father).

What's In A Name?
From the Merriam-Webster Dictionary Word of the Day for January 8th:
doughty \DOW-tee "OW" as in "cow"\ adjective
: marked by fearless resolution : valiant
Example sentence:
"Guy . . . is a doughty Swiss immigrant who insists the only cure for illness is fifteen minutes of violent gymnastics followed by a freezing shower." (Tad Friend, Vogue, January 1991)
Did you know?
"Doughty" is a persevering Old English word. Its earliest form was "dyhtig," but early on, the vowel changed, and the word became "dohtig." That was probably due to influence from a related Old English word, "dohte," that meant "had worth." By the 13th century, the spelling "doughty" had begun to appear. The expected pronunciation would be \DAW-tee\, paralleling other similarly spelled old words like "bought" and "sought." But over the centuries, the spelling was sometimes confused with that of the now obsolete word "doubty" full of doubt, and thus, so it is conjectured, we have the pronunciation we use today.

Just 'Round The Bend
Early yesterday morning, Samuel Doughty passed away. His nephew Rick has penned this poem for Sam's sons:
Just 'round the bend
There's a river in which we all swim
It's the same for her as it is for him
At first we struggle, day and night
Learning which currents to go with and which to fight
As we make the long journey we come to know
How to accept and excel in the turbulent flow
And when loved ones drift from our sight
Gently floating into the light
We take comfort in knowing we will see them again
Waiting for us in the calm waters... just 'round the bend

All Apologies
Sorry for the long wait for an update folks. I've been swamped ever since I got back from The Netherlands and have just gotten a chance to get back at this.
So far I only have a few pictures from this year's 500. I have received a bunch of others from Sean and Brendan, but I need to transfer them to my home PC. Hopefully, I'l have 'em up by the end of the week.
I also updated the Contact Page. But I'm missing a ton of information there. Any updates would be greatly appreciated. You can e-mail them to me at rightwinger23@hotmail.com If you want to send pictures to me, direct that e-mail to chad.doughty@emersonprocess.com
I'd also like to get a quotes page up, but I can't seem to recall any of the good ones right now. If you can, please submit them to me with a short explanation providing the background.
Last but not least, if anyone is interested in publishing material for the site, I would love to have the help. There is a very easy to use web publishing interface that I use for the site, and you could be up and running with it in no time. Again, drop me an e-mail if you're interested.
